“Some of the folks in jail are there because they were denied bail. Most are there because they couldn’t afford it.” -John Benson, CGLA Director of Criminal Defense

Jail Intake Interviews

We take particular care in examining potential criminal defense clients. You need additional training and experience to conduct interviews of clients who are currently incarcerated.

Process: Conducting a jail intake involves coming to our office to pick up information on the potential client and traveling to either 26th and California or 11th and Hamilton (juvenile detention facility) to conduct the interview of the incarcerated individual.

As with regular intakes, volunteers must come to our weekly Thursday intake meeting to present the case.

Training: Attend a CGLA jail intake training session and observe an experienced volunteer conduct a jail intake. Jail intake training is conducted one-on-one with CGLA staff. Please inquire at intake meetings for more information.

Requirements: Experience in regular intake procedure. Attorney licensed in the state of Illinois or law student with 7-11 license.

Suggested Commitment: Once trained, CGLA will contact volunteers as needed to go to the jail, which occurs approximately twice a month.
